All interested are asked to attend at Mallow Railway Station at 2.30p.m. where Mayor Dan Joe Fitzgerald will inaugurate the trail as part of National Heritage Week. The trail will proceed to the various points of interest throughout the town and will end at Mallow bridge.

Local historians will give a brief resume at each stop where plaques detailing the significance of each location will be erected. In addition there is the option of purchasing Audio in hand guides which further elaborate on the traumatic events experienced by the people of Mallow during the War of Independence and the subsequent Civil War.

The Trail, as well as recalling this Historic period in Mallow, through its integration into the Town structure and its innovative audio guides is designed to assist and promote Tourism and local business.

Mallow Development Partnership (MDP) through the Heritage sub-committee (Chaired by Tim Sheehan) is in partnership with Mallow Town Council, Cork Institute of Technology and the Heritage Council of Ireland in establishing and promoting the Mallow Rebel Trail.

The Big Clean Up in Mallow takes place on Saturday March 12th . Mallow Tidy Towns asks everyone who can to come along to one of the meeting points on Saturday morning at 10.30am. Bags, and disposable gloves will be ready at these locations to make a good spring clean of Mallow.

The recent IBAL survey (Irish Businesses Against Litter) survey rated Mallow as being Littered, and listed 48 th out of 53 areas examined. Everyone knows that with a little more effort Mallow can and will be better than that. Last August, Mallow had been rated “Clean to European Norms”, listed 27 th out of 53 towns / cities surveyed, and cleaner than Cobh, Midleton and Youghal. Neighbouring towns like Fermoy are deemed to be litter free. Mallow can be just as good and become Litter Free and be a cleaner better place to live, work and enjoy.

Looking around our approach roads, kerbs and open spaces we can see we all need to be a bit more careful about litter, and this Big Clean Up on Saturday March 12th will really help boost the tidiness of the town.

So come out on this Saturday morning, join the effort for an hour or two, or whatever you can, and make Mallow a cleaner better place. Meeting points are the Roundabout Tavern car park; Dogs Heads at the Spa; Garda Station Car Park; and Aldi, all at 10.30am.

Much of Mallow’s residential and business community turned out to hear the news. Minister Batt O’Keefe, the town Mayor, the county Mayor, Chamber of Commerce president Pat O’Sullivan and Intel Capital head, Damien Callaghan all spoke at the meeting.

It was revealed thet there would be a partnership between the National Center for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching and Learning ( NCE-MSTL ) and the schools in Mallow, Doneraile and Buttevant. This partnership will look to address the issues with the maths and science curriculi at present, including the decline in students taking maths at an honours level.

Mallow will also partner with the NIMBUS center in the Cork Institute of Technology as a testing ground for new technologies incubated at the center. It is hoped thet local firms will be instrumental in testing the technologies for real-life applications, and that the new technologies can improve the lot of businesses, residents and visitors to the town.

The University of Limerick will team up with Mallow’s state-of-the-art primary healthcare center, for initiatives including work placement programs.

Intel Capital’s Damian Callaghan spoke of how the action plan devised by the Mallow Development Partnership tallied closely with the Innovation Task Force’s Building Ireland’s Smart Economy document which outlines the government programme for medium-term economic recovery based around the concept of the Smart Economy.

The riders were mounted on a mix of motocross bikes and enduro bikes, and the dry course was punishing for all contestants, with tree roots exposed by the bikes acting as extra obstacles to the riders.

The event was well organised with plenty of staff to ensure riders and spectators kept safe, and the lovely Red Bull ladies were distributing the energy beverage, keeping the visitors hydrated and energised. Locals were full of praise for the event, which also featured music later on in the day. “It’s great for the town”, one shopkeeper enthused.
